Lincoln’s stovepipe top hat served as more than fashionable headwear. He used it to store and carry notes, letters, even bills. Why do they call it a stovepipe hat? Well, the rise is so tall and straight with no flair that it resembles a length of pipe. They’re hard to come by nowadays, the traditional top hat being much more current, but still pretty “retro”. Best you go to a custom haberdashery to get one made just for you.
Lincoln was 6’4”, making him our country’s tallest president. That of course raises the question, who was our shortest president? That would be our 4th president, James Madison, who stood a stately 5’4”, making him an entire foot shorter than Honest Abe – even without his hat!

Lincoln really liked machines and gadgets. He liked to take them apart to see how they worked and try to put them together again. He even tried his hand at inventing, and in 1849 had a patent issued for “A Device for Buoying Vessels Over Shoals”. The machine never made it, but the patent was a new thing for a president, and no president has held a patent since.

In the weeks before his death, Lincoln was extremely melancholy. He had seen portents of his own death, and had been dreaming of death as well. On one occasion looked in the mirror and saw a double reflection, one image much paler and blurrier than the other. He told his wife that he thought it meant that he had survived his first term, but wouldn’t survive his second. The week prior to his death, Lincoln had a dream of hearing crying in a distant room of the White House. He sought out the room and found that it had a coffin in it. He asked the weeping person who had died and the person responded that it was the President. In his dream, Lincoln looked into the coffin and saw himself.

Not only did he get premonitions, he also believed in the occult. Well, if he didn’t believe then he was at least willing to go along with it. Because he and Mary had lost little Edward and Willie at such young ages, they actually held seances in the White House trying to contact their dearly departed. Mrs. Lincoln also attended seances at the homes of famous mediums of the day. Whether or not they made contact is unknown.

Not only was Lincoln spiritual and intelligent, he was also a heck of a speech writer. He wrote his own speeches, and it is said that his famous Gettysburg Address wasn’t even the best one! Rumor has it that the speech Lincoln made to the Illinois Republican Convention on May 29, 1856 was his best, but it was either so enthralling that nobody remembered to take notes, or it was so controversial that nobody was allowed to print them. Either way, no record of it exists.

PRESCOTT - Rich and Jenny Schulte thought it would help boost the historic look of their new Whiskey Row store to remove thepegboard and plaster on one long wall to uncover the old brick.

Two huge cigar ads were painted onto those bricks about a century ago when the store was the Grand Saloon.

PRESCOTT - Rich and Jenny Schulte thought it would help boost the historic look of their new Whiskey Row store to remove thepegboard and plaster on one long wall to uncover the old brick.

The Schultes will leave the ads in place and display their Western items in front of the ads at their Jenny Longhorn store.

“Prescott is an historic town and it’s part of its history,” Jenny said. “It tells a story.”

The building went up in 1903 after a huge 1900 fire torched much of downtown Prescott including Whiskey Row. The Grand Saloon and soon the Grand Hotel upstairs were the first businesses in the structure now at 152 and 154 1/2 Montezuma St.

The original owner was H.D. Stuthman until the property went to his wife Amelie during their divorce in 1908, according the City of Prescott’s Courthouse Plaza Historic District Survey by retired Prescott historic preservation specialist Nancy Burgess.

A 1907 phone book at the Sharlot Hall Museum lists the Grand Saloon, but it’s not in the 1923 and 1942 books.

The saloon undoubtedly had to change its name to something else when Arizona’s liquor prohibition started in 1915 until 1930 when the prohibition ended nationwide.

The front part of the building was a retail store when his late father bought it in 1949, former county judge Howard Hinson said. In the back was an assay office, locksmith and moving/storage place.

His father found a gambling table in the basement.

“I guess there was a good bit of gambling in the 1940s as well as prostitution,” Hinson said.

His father opened the Holiday Shop there. The late county supervisor Gheral Brownlow became his father’s partner in the late 1960s. Brownlow later became the shop’s sole owner and moved the shop to another downtown location in about 1984, Hinson recalled.

The upstairs remains a rooming house today called the Grand Highland Hotel.

The store already had plastered walls when his father bought it, so he didn’t see the cigar ads until they were uncovered last week.

“It’s really interesting,” he said.

When the Jenny Longhorn store first opened in September, the Schultes exposed only a small portion of one of the ads near one of the front display windows. Passersby could see only two letters - “ur” - so they’ve been curious for months to see the entire ad.

“You wouldn’t believe the number of people who had their face against the window to see what it is,” Jenny said.

“Arthur” was the word containing the “ur” - that’s for Chester Arthur, the country’s 21st president. The entire ad, about 10 feet by 10 feet in size, says “Try a Gen. Arthur” and features a man pointing at onlookers.

President Arthur was a Civil War brigadier general who was vice president until President James Garfield was assassinated. He was known for accompanying White House meals with cigars and champagne.

The company that sold Gen. Arthur cigars, called General Cigar Corp. at the time, went out of business in 1917.

The other cigar ad is even larger - about 30 feet long and 6 feet high. It says “Owl 5¢ cigar” and features a painted owl.

Between the ads is painted “Connelly S.F.,” possibly the name of the artist.

The ads are extensively pocked with chipped spots, probably from nails that held the plaster to the painted brick, Rich surmised.

The brick is likely from Prescott because it has the telltale signs of soft, low-quality brick. Most of the brick that business owners used to rebuild their structures after the 1900 fire was the low-cost Prescott brick, said Prescott Historic Preservation Specialist Cat Moody. The local firing facilities were inferior, she said. The bricks have an orange tint, and are chalky and powdery in places.

“If it’s ever painted, it can’t be stripped,” or that would “undermine the integrity” of the structure, Moody warned. It’s also impossible to pressure-wash and restore it on the outside, she said.

So it sounds like the ads will stay where they are.

Who knows what’s hidden behind the other long wall.

“Ultimately, we’d like to expose that too,” Jenny said.

The bead shop in back also remains covered with the plaster.

It was only only 4 years ago that three men asked themselves “what does one do to celebrate Presidents Day?” Since that time, we’ve found others share both our question and more importantly our answer.

As our 2010 Press Release indicates, this year we have once again increased the number of presidents portrayed. 14 Society members will put on the presidential pants February 15, 2010. For a listing of all the presidents, refer to the “Society Members” link above.

Many exciting elements have also been added to our itinerary and logistics. As a prior article indicated, this year the presidents will be gallantly ushered about Denver in their very own limo-bus, complete with bunting and our Society’s seal on the side. Thanks to our friends at Colorado Capitol Watch we have been able to keep costs low and patriotism high. In addition to the new transportation, we’ll also be formalizing our walk up the 16th Street Mall this year. The newly titled “Presidential Walk of Honor” will take place at approximately 10:30am when all 14 presidents will greet and bestow patriotic tidings to the citizens of Denver using the mall.

The Presidents Day Society encourages all citizens to meet up with us and share a pint while reflecting on our great country and the leaders who have guided it. To that end, an approximate schedule of our stops is listed below.
